  • The house was quiet, much more quiet than anyone expected after the birth of two beautiful and healthy babies. They were twins, a girl and a boy. Although not identical, they had the same eyes and smile. They were placed next to each other and to everyone’s surprise, they were soon holding hands as they slept peacefully, unaware of the heavy tension around them.
  • ‘Are you sure about what you want to do?’ The mid-wife who had helped them deliver the babies in secret asked. She looked at them, sadness in her eyes. She had known them for a long time and was a family friend. When they had asked her to help them, she accepted with a heavy heart but she knew they needed her help. The new parents looked at each other, tears in their own eyes. They knew they had no choice but to do this if they wanted to have a good future.
  • ‘Not really but we do not have a choice. We cannot afford to take care of both of them. We will have to give up one of them.’ The father spoke. Anyone listening could hear the heartbreak in his voice. The mother sobbed as she looked at her two babies, her hand clutching at her heart.
  • They were poor and could not afford to take care of two newborn babies. This way, they could provide for one while giving the other a chance for a better life. They were doing this for them. ‘I’d like to at least take a photo of them together – just like this.’ The father said as he brought out an old Polaroid camera. He only had two photo papers left but they were enough. He approached the sleeping newborns and snapped two photos, one after the other. He took the photos and gave one to the mother while he took the other one on the desk.
  • There, on the desk was an envelope with a letter that he and his wife had written a couple of days before the birth. He opened the envelope and placed the photo there while a single tear fell on the envelope. He walked to where the newborns were sleeping and smiled.
  • ‘I’m sorry we have to separate you. I know it’s not fair but we do not have a choice. Maybe, in the future, you’ll meet again, should it be your destiny.’ He said. He heard his wife sob and he went to sit down next to her on the edge of the bed. He could see she was exhausted from giving birth without any medication or help to two babies. In his eyes, she was the strongest woman he ever met but this was going to take its toll on her and on him. ‘Jagi, you know we have no other option.’ He said.
  • ‘I know but the thought of giving up our daughter breaks my heart. What if she is not treated well? What if they mistreat her?’ She asked, almost ready to break into hysterics as she held on to him.
  • ‘I know jagi, I know.’ He said, trying to soothe her but in reality, he could feel his own heart breaking. ‘We just need to have faith that she will be well taken care of and that she will have an amazing future waiting for her. We have to hope that she will grow into a strong, beautiful, happy woman and if we’re lucky, we’ll get to meet her one day.’ He said.
  • It had been a few hours before it was finally time. It was night, the Busan street only lighted with a few street lamps. One of the lamps was broken and another one was flickering on and off, making the street look and feel even more eerie as the father hurried with the baby wrapped up in a blanket in his arms. He kept looking around, checking to see if there was anyone around that would see him do what he was about to do.
  • He stopped at the orphanage and stood there, in front of the large wooden door. He felt a chill run down his spine as he looked at his beautiful daughter. She had big eyes and she appeared to be calm. ‘Ah my sweet daughter – my sweet Minji.’ He said as he kissed the baby’s forehead. She giggled and his heart broke even more. ‘I am so sorry to do this to you – I am so sorry to separate you from your twin brother and I can only hope that you will forgive us in the future.’ He said as he placed her down in the box he had brought with him.
  • He took the envelope from his pocket and placed it in the box along with a small locket. It wasn’t fancy or expensive, it was all they could afford given the circumstances but it was special. Inside was the engraving ‘M’ for her name and ‘J’ for her brother. He placed it in the box and then rung the doorbell, once, twice – three times before he broke into a run.
  • He hid behind the wall on the opposite side as he looked on. The door opened and a young nun walked out. She looked around before she spotted the box. The woman gasped as she quickly called out for the nun in charge – the Madre most likely, as she bent down and picked up the baby. The nun held her close to her chest as she cradled her and rocked her. The Madre came running and the father could see them talking before the Madre picked up the envelope and necklace.
  • He could see her sighing as she looked around and he hid further, letting the dark night engulf him. He could still see them as they went inside and closed the door. Was that the last time he’d ever see his daughter?
  • He stayed there for a while as he saw the lights going on throughout the orphanage. He knew that they would contact the cops to try and find them but they took the necessary precautions. He knew there will be a whole process - they would take care of her until she could be fostered or if she was lucky, adopted. He finally started walking away but his mind was still going. He never imagined his life would turn out this way. He always wanted children and when they had found out they were expecting, they were ecstatic until they found out they were having twins.
  • Then everything went downhill. Both he and his wife were sad and heartbroken but they knew they had to make a decision that will be with them for the rest of their lives. They had kept it a secret and they will have to continue keeping it a secret for as long as they could – it would be something that only he, his wife and the mid-wife would know about.
  • He arrived home where he found his wife nursing their son. Her eyes were still red and puffy as he sat down next to her. He looked at them and tried to offer a small but warm smile as he grabbed the little one’s finger which instantly curled around his. ‘Did they find her?’ She asked him, voice laced with worry.
  • ‘Yes, jagi, I stayed until I made sure they took her inside. They took the letter and necklace as well.’ He told her as he caressed her face.
  • ‘Do you think, they will keep the name we gave her?’ She asked him and he sighed, unsure of what to say.
  • ‘I don’t see why not.’ He replied. ‘How is our little Jungkook doing?’ He asked.
  • ‘He’s feeding well.’ She replied as she looked down at the small baby in her arms. He was sucking on as he drank the milk, his eyes closed, a happy serene look on his face. Her husband closed his own eyes as he kissed her forehead.

  • Here we are with a new story for all of you. I hope you all get to enjoy this story and support it like you did with Wings of Innocence. I promise to try my hardest to provide a good story. This one is more likely to be lighter (although the prologue is pretty tense). I look forward to what you think. - Tae's Misfit
